188B Investment Visa

Provisional Visa (Subclass 188)

This Subclass 118B visa allows the applicant can live in Australia up to 4 years 3months. This provisional visa requires the applicant to invest at least AUD1.5 million in an Australian State or Territory and maintain business or investment activity in Australia.

  • successful record of eligible investment or qualifying business activity
  • have net business and personal assets of $2.25 million in past 2 years
  • have at least 3 years experience in managing business(es) or eligible investments

Also, the following requirements are met:


  • No business turnover requirement
  • Under 55 years old – The applicant will not receive an invitation if the applicant is aged 55 or older at the time of the invitation to apply for the 188B visa, unless the State or Territory government agency has determined the applicant’s investment will be of exceptional economic benefit.

  • For one of past 5 fiscal years – either:

(a) Managed qualifying business & hold 10% of total value of business;

  • make a designated investment of $1.5 million into state/ territory bond for 4 years
    when asked & before the visa is granted

Subclass 188A Business Innovation Stream

  • Business proposal is available for the  sponsoring State/Territory
  • Must be sponsored by a State/Territory Government
  • Business and personal assets of $800 000
  • Business turnover of $500 000
  • Meets the 65 Points Test
  • Under 55 years old (age waivers possible)

Subclass 188C Significant Investor Visa Stream

  • Applicants must make an investment of at least $5million.
  • From 1 July 2015, the law requires the following $5million investments:
    • At least $500,000 in eligible Australian venture capital or growth private equity fund(s) investing in start-up and small private companies.
    • At least $1.5 million in an eligible managed fund(s) or Listed Investment Companies (LICs) that invest in emerging companies listed on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX); and
    • A ‘balancing investment’ of $3 million in managed fund(s) or LICs that Invest in a combination of eligible assets that include other ASX listed companies, eligible corporate bonds or notes, annuities and real property (subject to the 10 per cent limit on residential real estate).

Subclass 188D Premium Investor Visa Stream

  • Accelerated process to permanent residence subclass 888 after 12 months
  • Requires investment of $15 million
  • No residency requirement after visa grant
  • Criteria aligns with priorities of government’s national investment policy
  • Complying Investments are more flexible in terms of investment class

Subclass 188E Entrepreneur Visa

  • Nominated by State/Territory Government
    • Under 55 years old (over 55 years old is possible unless regarded exceptional)
  • Applicant must undertake a complying entrepreneur activity
  • Applicant has “eligible Partner” comprising one or more of:
    • Commonwealth/State/Territory Government;
    • Publicly Funded Research or Innovation Organisation;
    • Investor registered as an Australian Venture Capital Limited Partnership or Early Stage Venture Capital Limited Partnership; or
    • Higher Education Provider
  • Has Competent English (equivalent to IELTS 6 or PTE 50)
