Skilled Independent Visa - Skilled Visa Australia (189 Visa) NZ Pathway

This visa permits eligible NZ citizens those who qualify for a permanent residence visa by applying for a special skilled visa designed solely for NZ citizens.

As of 26 February 2001, with amendments to Australia’s Social Security Act, the Australian visa environment for New Zealander began to change. Since then New Citizens cannot access to social welfare benefits or other entitlements until they obtain a permanent resident visa. Eligible NZ citizens retained their social welfare entitlements and can apply for Australian Citizenship and they are also eligible to sponsor family members.

Subclass 189 New Zealand Stream

This visa lets eligible New Zealand citizens who have demonstrated commitment and contribution to Australia, live and work in Australia permanently.

  • You must hold a New Zealand Special Category (subclass 444) visa;
  • You must have lived in Australia for at least the last 5 years; and
  • You must have started living here on or before 19 February 2016.

Meet Character Requirements

If there are character issues while in Immigration Clearance, they will be questioned on this by the Airport Inspector. The Airport Inspector then decides whether or not NZ Citizens are permitted into Australia or forced to depart Australia on the same aircraft that brought them into Australia.

Satisfy the Income Requirement

The applicant’s taxable income as shown on their Notice of Assessment, issued by the Australian Taxation Office, for each of the 4 completed financial years before the applicant applies for this visa must be the minimum income threshold listed in the relevant regulatory instrument for that income year.

Not A Previous Application Refused or Cancelled

The applicant might not be eligible for this visa if the applicant has had a visa cancelled or refused while he/she were in Australia.

Meet Health Requirement

The applicant and any family members who apply for the visa with the applicant must meet the health requirement. Family members not accompanying the applicant to Australia may also need to meet the health requirement.

Lived in Australia for 5 years

The applicant must have been usually resident in Australia for a continuous period of at least 5 years immediately before the date of their application. A person is ‘usually resident’ in is assessed by taking into account their physical residence (where the person eats, sleeps, has a home) and the person’s intention to make that place their home. The continuous period of usual residence in Australia must have started on or before 19 February 2016.
